SYLLABUS - OVER[site] *a division of issues and methods

 This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of new ways of making art and making meaning in art. Student be will asked to take unconventional approaches as a way to expand their methodology. Students will be asked to examine the role of craft, skill, tradition, invention, uniqueness, permanence and temporality within the context of art-making. This course does not intend to discourage any student from the commitment to a specific material. Rather, it aims to create new paths, entrances and means of looking at and making all different kinds of art works.


 We will loosely cover the following units in this class. Occassion new ideas, thoughts and methods will be introduced.

        Unit 1 - History, Site and Place

        Unit 2 - Residue and Palimpsest

        Unit 3 - Performance, Participation and Organizing

        Unit 4 - Activism, Agriculture and Sustainability

 

 Collaboration - Collaboration is strongly encouraged, but not a requirement of the class. Collaboration can be yourself and a classmate, yourself and many classmates or yourself and a student, individual or organization from outside of the class. Please keep me updated on who you are working with if you choose to collaborate.

 

 The Low-Down - These are the formalities.

1. I am a reasonable person and you are each singular, thinking individuals. If you have a problem, a question or a suggestion you should feel free to come talk to me about it. Email me for an appointment jmwarner@uiuc.edu.

2. You are required to attend class and be alert. We are scheduled to meet tu/th 2-4:50. Many times you will be given a 'work day'. During your work day you will have a scheduled time to meet with me to discuss your work. These meetings are required and missing them will effect your attendance. UPON YOUR THIRD MISSED MEETING OR CLASS YOUR GRADE WILL BE EFFECTED NEGATIVELY!

3. Lateness - I find lateness to be disrespectful to both your peers and to me. Please get to class on time.

4. Participation - We will be creating a class economy, visiting sites off campus, having small and large group discussions, watching films and working cooperatively. Based on this formula your participation and steady engagement is essential. I will be fair about travel times and other constraints, but only if you make me aware of them, so please keep me informed.

5. Your grade will be based on the following formula - 1/3 Participation and 2/3 Project Scores. Participation scores will be base on the specific criteria of each individual assignment.
